Malarone

Malarone (Proguanil Hydrochloride/Atovaquone) is a combination of two active ingredients and is considered an antimalarial medication. The medication along with protective clothing and insect repellents are used to prevent and treat malaria. It interferes with the growth and even kills malaria parasites living inside red blood cells and other tissues that have entered the body through mosquito bites.

Malarone (Proguanil Hydrochloride/Atovaquone) should be taken orally once daily with a meal or glass of milk. Your dosage will depend on whether the medication is used to prevent or treat malaria, the patient`s weight and response to the treatment, contact a doctor for exact dosage. To prevent malaria, start taking the medication 1 to 2 days prior to entering a common malarial area. The medication should be continued during the duration of the stay and for at least 7 days after leaving the area. For treatment of malaria it is recommended to take the medication for at least 3 days in a row.

Patients using Malarone (Proguanil Hydrochloride/Atovaquone) may encounter side effects such as:

• Upset stomach or pain
• Diarrhea
• Itching
• Nausea
• Headache
• Dizziness

Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:

• High fever
• Problem with balance
• Severe skin rash
• Dark urine or stool
• Anemia
• Unusual bleeding
• Jaundice

Should you vomit within 1 hour of consuming the medication, it is recommended to dose again. Should vomiting persist, contact a doctor immediately.
